These essays, poems, articles, and reviews trace the work of bold artists and writers who embody an uncompromising spirit. From James Baldwin’s searing prose to Forough Farrokhzad’s haunting verse, from the provocative surrealism of Penny Slinger to the enduring activism of Marsha P. Johnson, to Rrose Sélavy’s enigmatic provocations, and even to the anonymous individuals who generously reveal fragments of their secret lives—this collection seeks to honor those who challenge convention.
At its core, this project is as much a personal diary as it is a celebration of the creative impulse. It affectionately catalogs the books on my shelves and the shifting textures of life in New York City’s restless East Village, where culture spills into your lap whether you like it or not.
